How to use

An oral drug, Antabuse should be taken as per the doctor's prescription. Generally one or two Antabuse tablets are prescribed a day. If you have any difficulty in swallowing the drug, it can be crushed or taken by mixing it with liquid.

While you are on Antabuse medication, it is better to avoid all kinds of alcohols, including wine, beer, mouthwash, aftershave lotions, colognes and liquid medicines.

Drug Class and Mechanism

A person who is on Antabuse medication can experience unpleasant reactions even if small amounts of alcohol are taken. The drug acts by blocking alcohol's oxidation at the acetaldehyde stage. After Antabuse is taken, the acetaldehyde concentration in the blood will be higher by five to ten times than seen during metabolism of the same amount of alcohol.

This concentration of acetaldehyde leads to unpleasant symptoms, which are referred to as Antabuse-alcohol reaction. Well, the drug does not influence the rate of alcohol elimination.

Missed Dose

If a dosage is missed, you can take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is time for your next dosage, it is better to sip the missed one. Never take two doses of the drug at the same time.

Storage

Antabuse should be stored at room temperatures between 59 degrees F and 86 degrees F. It should be concealed in a tight, closed container and kept away from light and heat.
